Fram
by Fredrik Moen Gabrielsenon 28 April 2012
A series about the famous Polarship "Fram" - used on great
expeditions over a century ago. Nansen used it on his expedition to
the Arctic in 1893 - 1896 and Amundsen used it to discover the
South Pole in 1910 - 1912.
The reason for its success was due to its special construction. The ship is both unusually wide and unusually shallow in order to better withstand the forces of pressing ice. The propeller was also designed to be retracted in to the ship and the inside of the ship was designed to allow the crew to live on board for up to 5 years.
